Brescia Forensic Medicine Institute (University of Brescia) is located inside “Spedali Civili di Brescia” hospital (one of the largest hospital in Italy).
The staff consists of 9 MD specialized in forensic medicine, 4 biologists, 10 lab technicians, 3 secretaries, 4 MD attending forensic medicine specialization and 3 PhD students.
Main activities are:
- 24 hours/7 days availability of clinical forensic examinations and counselling visits in cases of suspected child abuse, domestic violence and sexual assault
- Close cooperation with Police Forces, Prosecutors, Judges and lawyers
- Forensic and clinical autopsies
- Malpractice cases evaluation both in penal and civil Court
- Toxicological, Forensic Genetics and Histopathology Laboratories
Institut für Rechtsmedizin – Hannover Medical School
The Hannover Medical School (MHH) covers the Central Clinic, the Clinic for Paediatrics, the Gynaecology and Obstetrics, the transplantation research center - the so called Hans Borst Center for Heart and Stem Cell Research - further research laboratories. The MHH is both an academic and a clinical institution. Its foci is the whole spectrum of medical treatments of center of supramaximal care, especially transplantation medicine and the adjacent fields of immunology. Additional foci are affections of the immune system and infections, cancer therapy, cardiovascular medicine, pneumology, function replacing as well as reconstructive surgery, clinic for plastic, chiroplastic and restorative surgery, urology, clinic for oral and facial surgery, high-tech hearing aids like cochlear implants, neonatology. Its Department of Legal Medicine with emphasis on clinical forensic medicine is responsible for the greatest part of Lower Saxony. The Department of Legal Medicine, Hannover Medical University, has a clinical forensic medicine unit. Clinical forensic medicine is a routine part of daily workflow of the medical staff of the department. It has considerable experience in establishing and managing a network of clinical forensic clinics (Netzwerk Probeweis, now covering more than 20 hospitals throughout Lower Saxony).
Institute of Forensic and Traffic Medicine, Heidelberg, Germany
The Institute of Forensic and Traffic Medicine Heidelberg is an interdisciplinary research institution, which covers the disciplines medicine, chemistry, pharmacy, psychology, biology, physics, engineering sciences, and medical informatics. One main focus of the institute is clinical forensic medicine and research, such as the improvement of forensic imaging methods and workflows in trauma cases. In addition to the academic lectures at the Medical University of Heidelberg, the experience gained from research projects and daily practice are the basis for a broad range of training and education programs for physicians, lawyers, paramedics, and police officers. In 2011, the Institute of Forensic and Traffic Medicine Heidelberg launched the first clinical forensic examination unit in Baden-Wuerttemberg and continuously expands its cooperation with clinical and non-clinical victim care institutions. Upon request of the local Ministry of Social Affairs, the institute established a concept for nationwide access to clinical forensic services for victims of violence. The institute further established several research collaborations with local and international partners from different fields of expertise and is an institutional partner of the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute, Graz, Austria.
Faculty of Law – Palacký University Olomouc, Olomouc (Czech Republic)
Olomouc is a prominent centre of education and culture. The history of higher education in Olomouc began in 1566, when a Jesuit college was established and granted University rights in 1573. The University of Olomouc is the second oldest university in the Czech lands (after Charles University in Prague), spread its influence not only through Moravia and Silesia, but also in Austria, Germany, Poland, Eastern Europe and Scandinavia. The Faculty of Law is one of the two youngest faculties of Palacký University and at the same time one of the youngest law faculties in the Czech Republic. In spite of its short time of existence, with its dynamic and ambitious team of teachers and researchers it is already an equal partner of the other Czech faculties of law and its activity has been highly appraised by foreign institutions. The Faculty of Law does research especially in law disciplines, but also in social sciences, in particular Political Science and European Studies. The research is basically oriented towards comparison, in particular with Central Europe. In Political Science the Faculty has opened European Studies with Specialization in European Law. This programme gives exclusive education in European integration process and European law. Owing to an intensive co-operation of Palacký University with the Paris Lodron University in Salzburg, part of this study can be done in Austria (“Joint-Study”) and an Austrian degree can be obtained in addition to the Czech degree. The Faculty of Law also makes a contribution to protection of rights, through its counseling, especially through its Law Clinic, a consultation centre for the citizens of Olomouc and the surrounding district. Legal assistance is especially directed at socially or otherwise handicapped people. Each year, many citizens turn to this Centre for assistance. The Faculty of Law does research especially in law disciplines, but also in social sciences, in particular Political Science and European Studies. The research is basically oriented towards comparison, in particular with Central Europe.
Department of Forensic Medicine - Charles University, Hradec Králové
Charles University in Prague, First Faculty of Medicine with almost 1 200 staff members and 3 400 students represents the largest medical faculty in the Czech Republic. It is an integral part of Charles University in Prague from its foundation in 1348. As such, it is also the oldest medical faculty in Central Europe with an important national position and international aspirations. It is a dynamic component of the European medical educational system, runs the leading-edge biomedical research within the broader frame of the European Research Area and is recognized as a valuable member of the local community. The Faculty itself benefits from “on-the-spot” dialogue of researchers and doctors. Its research teams are involved in multiple national research projects emphasizing collaboration between basic and clinical sciences, together with researchers in other disciplines from extramural institutions. Importantly, its engagement in international teams and EU projects sharply increases. The University is run by state, the University Hospital is paid by public funds. Clinical forensic medicine is a routine part of daily workflow of the medical staff of the department.
Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Clinical Forensic Imaging
The Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Clinical Forensic Imaging (LBI CFI) was founded in June 2008 and is an institute of the Ludwig Boltzmann Gesellschaft GmbH (LBG). The institute dedicates its research efforts to Clinical Forensic Medicine. The scientific goal of the interdisciplinary research team is to develop basic parameters for the clinical-forensic use of MR and CT imaging. The vision is to improve the results of clinical forensic examinations and extend expert’s reports to strengthen the position of surviving victims of violence and achieve a higher level of legal security.
